Establishment and early development
It was the first of many technology companies to benefit from the ideas and support of engineering professor Frederic Terman in what eventually emerged as Silicon Valley and Stanford. The company established itself as a manufacturer of advanced instruments.
His first client was Walt Disney Productions, who purchased eight soundtracks for use in the production of his feature-length animated film Fantasia (1940). During World War II, the company produced products for critical military applications independent of Packard, while Hewlett served in the Army Signal Division. During the war, the company worked with the Naval Laboratory to develop advanced anti-radar technology and artillery shells.
Post-war development
After the post-war slump in defense contracts, in 1947 Hewlett-Packard returned to war profit levels and continued to grow through a product diversification strategy. One of the first famous products was the high-speed content that was introduced in 1951.
In 1964, Hewlett-Packard devices were recognized internationally for advertising technology. The company’s engineers fly around the world using the HP 5060A cesium beam instrument to synchronize the universe’s atomic clock to a millionth of a second.
Four years later, the company introduced its first desktop calculator. Sold at one-sixth the price of the original desktop calculator, the pocket calculator forced the venerable slide rule to become obsolete.
Although the company has never developed a weapons system, it has been heavily dependent on military spending throughout its history, as the equipment used to manufacture and test military products, especially weapon systems, has become increasingly dependent on electronic and semiconductor technology.
Hewlett-Packard’s military experience was confirmed in 1969 when he became president of the United States. Richard M. Nixon appointed Packard as Deputy Secretary of Defense, where he oversaw initial plans to manage the F-16 and A-10, the nation’s two most successful fighter jets.
Computer work

It failed because it was not compatible with the IBM PC, which had become the industry standard. Although technically interesting, it failed in the market. The company’s first successful product for the computer market was a printer. The HP LaserJet became Hewlett-Packard’s most successful product in 1984, generating rave reviews and huge sales.
mid-1980s, Hewlett-Packard sold its science and engineering business to Sun Microsystems, Inc., Silicon Graphics, Inc. and lost out to rival computer station companies such as Apollo Computer. In 1989, Hewlett-Packard sold Apollo to Sun and then to Dell Inc. bought to be the first workstation factory to share and shut down.
In the early 1990s, the company missed some revenue and profit targets, causing its stock price to plummet. Eventually, Packard retired to take an active role in managing the company. The most advanced changes, with the introduction of new computers, color printers and peripherals at low prices, made the company one of the top three computer manufacturers in the world.
After the company went bankrupt in 1993, Packard retired again.
Also in the 1990s, Hewlett-Packard cooperated with Intel Corporation, a company integrated circuit. The manufacturer introduced the 64-bit Itani microprocessor in 2001. In the 2000s, Hewlett-Packard expanded its global operations by opening research laboratories in Bangalore, India (2002), Beijing, China (2005), and St. Petersburg (2007).
